My Children's play script: Ungrateful man; adapted from E Sarn folktale


Ungrateful man

Scene 1: At the well
Once there was a very deep well in the forest. There were four kinds of animals which fail down into the well. They were a python, a monkey, a tiger, and an old man at the bottom of the well. They could not come out of the well at all. Then, there is an orphaned poor man who took a hobblingly walk with thirstiness. He thought that “There should have some water in the well.” Then, he used the vine to fasten the bamboo tube and put it to dip the water.  As he put it to the bottom of the well, the monkey who was fastest of all climbed out first. The monkey told the poor man to visit him at the mountain and took a bow to say thank you.
Monkey:  Thank you sir (bow). If you have a free time, you are welcome to visit me at the mountain.
Poor man: Ok, that great.
After that, the poor man put the bamboo tube into the well. The tiger climbed out the well and told the poor man to visit him in the cave in the deep forest. The tiger bow to the poor man to thanks him.
Tiger:  Thank you sir (bow). If you have a free time, you are welcome to visit me in the deep forest.
Poor man: Ok, that great.
After that, the poor man put the bamboo tube into the well. The snake climbed out the well and told the poor man to visit. The snake came out before the old man who was the slowest of all. The snake took a bow to the poor man to thanks him.
Snake:  Thank you sir (bow). If you have a free time, you are welcome to visit me in the deep forest.
Poor man: Ok, that great.
Finally, the poor man put the bamboo tube into the well. The snake climbed out the well and told the poor man to visit. The old man came out and blamed to the poor man but he finally said thanks to the poor man.
Old man: How dared you! I am a human like you why didn’t you take me out first before that animals.(a bit angry)
Poor man: What?
Old man: You helped me is the best you did, thank you. If you have a free time, you are welcome to visit me in village. (without angriness)

Scene 2: Visited the monkey
Two days later, the poor man went to the mountain to visit the monkey. When he arrived the monkey’s house, the monkey gave him a lot of treasures.
Poor man: Hello monkey, how are you?
Monkey:  I am fine, come in I will give you something to thank you. (give the poor man a box of treasures)
Poor man: Thank you. (feel happy) I will go now goodbye!

Scene 3: Visited the tiger
Next day, the poor man went to the cave in the deep forest to visit the Tiger. When he arrived the tiger’s house, the tiger gave him a lot of treasures also.
Poor man: Hello tiger, how are you?
Tiger:  I am fine, come in I will give you something to thank you. (give the poor man a box of treasures)
Poor man: Thank you. (feel happy) I will go now goodbye!

Scene 4: Scene 3: Visited the snake
Next day, the poor man went to the cave to visit the snake who lived with the mountain of the treasures. When he arrived the snake’s house, the snake gave him a lot of treasures also.
Poor man: Hello snake, how are you?
snake:  I am fine, come in I will give you something to thank you. (give the poor man a box of treasures)
Poor man: Thank you. (feel happy) I will go now goodbye!
Now the poor man had a lot of money and became a rich man in the village.

Scene 5: Visited the old man
Lastly, , the poor man went to the village to visit the old man who wanted the poor man’s treasures. The old man was greedy, so he planned to get the gold and the money from the poor man.
Poor man: Hello my friend, how are you?
Old man: Oh my friend, I was thinking of that well. Could you bring me to visit that well again? (flatter)
Poor man: Ok, here we go.

Scene 6: At the well
Then, two men went to the well in the forest. When the poor man went near the well, the old man pushed the poor man’s back to let him get drown. As soon as the poor man was falling down, the old man went back to the village. He went into the poor man’s house and packed the treasures away. During falling down, the Tewada came to help the poor man and took him home. When the old man saw the poor man, he ran away as fast as he could but he stumbled and his head knock on the died tree. The old man went out of mind and crazy. Finally, the poor man became a rich man and lived happily ever after.
